Being the world’s largest tea producer, India produces a wide range of teas. The country’s most popular export is black tea, which comes in three varieties.

Assam Tea

Assam tea is grown in the country’s northeastern region. The region’s tea is cultivated at a relatively low altitude in a rich and loamy soil.Assam is India’s largest tea producer and home to the country’s largest tea research center. In the year 1837, the first tea estate was built in Assam.

The tea from this region is rich and full-bodied, bright and heavy, and can be enjoyed with milk or sugar. This malty tea has a deep amber color and a malty flavor. It represents all that makes an excellent Indian black tea great. Assam Orthodox tea, which is hand-processed, is one of the best available and is only grown on Assam Valley estates. 

Darjeeling Tea

Darjeeling tea is delicious and delicately flavored, and it is regarded as one of the world’s finest teas.

Darjeeling teas are usually golden or amber in color. A floral or fruity taste is often detected. Many connoisseurs will never consider adding milk, sugar, or other additive to this style.

Darjeeling tea farms have three different harvests, each referred to as a “flush” and has its distinct flavor. Teas from the first flush are light and aromatic, while those from the second flush have a little more bite. The third flush,  produces lower quality tea.

When purchasing Darjeeling teas, the flush is always indicated on the box. You should expect first-flush teas to be more expensive, whereas third-flush teas to be the most affordable.

Nilgiri Tea

Nilgiri is a region in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Nilgiri tea is grown at a higher altitude in India than Darjeeling tea. The Blue Mountains (or Nilgiris) in southern India are situated at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 2,500 meters. Europeans planted the first tea plants in the 1850s, and the region is now renowned for green teas.

The flavors of Nilgiri teas are delicate and subtle. They are golden yellow and have a strong scent. The taste is unique in the tea world, with floral undertones and a creamy mouthfeel. Teas from Nilgiri are often blended with stronger teas 


 In addition to the various types of tea available in India, the country also has its unique tea preparation. It’s known as masala chai, and it’s a popular beverage worldwide.

Chai can be made in different ways. Black tea, milk, sugar, and spices are the essential ingredients. Chai’s unique flavor comes from a mixture of spices. Cardamom, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and peppercorns are the most popular.

Chai is a unique experience compared to a regular cup of tea. Even with its distinct spice, it’s exciting and relaxing.


India not only grows a lot of tea, but they also drink a lot of it. Tea consumption  accounts for 19% of global consumption. Almost all of the tea produced in the world is consumed within the country’s borders.
