How Much Tea Caffeine Will Affect You


Green tea, since it is unoxidized, should have less caffeine content than black tea. But the amount of caffeine in green tea may differ widely between people.

Based on the amount of polyphenol antioxidants present in the leaves and the length of time for which they are fermented, the amount of green tea caffeine content in an average cup of coffee varies from about two to four milligrams. Black tea, which is also oxidized, contains approximately three milligrams per cup. How much caffeine is in green tea vs coffee depends on the type of tea used. Japanese and Chinese teas contain moderate amounts of polyphenols. American and European teas, which are influenced by soil and farming, contain large amounts of polyphenols.

Since caffeine is not a powerful antioxidant, one theory is that theanine is helpful in protecting the brain cells from damage. Theanine may help prevent oxidative stress in the brain, which is implicated in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Theanine may also protect against the destruction of acetylcholine in the brain.

Based on the study of Dr. Huang, an expert on green tea and health benefits, in the Journal of American Science, it was concluded that there are many health benefits associated with the intake of two cups of the beverage every day. The amount of green tea caffeine content in a cup varies based on the type of tea used. The amount of the antioxidants found in the cup ranges from six to thirty milligrams. Based on these values, a cup would provide about seventy-five to one hundred milligrams of thiamine, caffeine, taurine and other antioxidants.

Based on the information provided by the study, a cup of the beverage contains approximately twenty-five to thirty milligrams of caffeine and about four to eight milligrams of thiamine. Based on the number of antioxidants present in the coffee, one would estimate that a cup of coffee contains approximately three thousand milligrams of the antioxidant polyphenol (or five hundred milligrams of theanine). Therefore, green tea has a significantly higher antioxidant concentration than coffee. In addition, coffee contains approximately one hundred milligrams of the antioxidant EGCG, which is only slightly more than green tea and about ten times less than a black coffee.

Other benefits provided by green tea include an increase in blood flow and better overall cardiovascular health. Caffeine increases blood pressure but only mildly, while the other antioxidants in the beverage improve the flow of the blood and prevent clots from forming. Green tea also contains catechin polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants and have been shown to prevent the formation of blood clots. Green tea also has a higher concentration of flavonoids than coffee, another antioxidant known to be beneficial to the cardiovascular system.

Adverse Effects

When compared to soft drinks, coffee is not a healthier option. However, it is still important to watch the amount of caffeine found in a beverage. Drinking coffee regularly may have adverse effects on the health of those who consume it on a regular basis. Since coffee contains caffeine, it may convert to other substances that can be harmful.

Therefore, a cup or two of the beverage should not be too much for those who do not have high blood pressure and should wait until after the recommended number of drinks have been consumed for them to experience any positive results. It is also important to realize that although there are more antioxidants in coffee than in tea, it is still possible to overdose on coffee and should limit its consumption to no more than four cups per day.

Guarana contains caffeine and has been used for centuries in some countries as a medicinal treatment for several different disorders, including diarrhea, stomach problems, asthma and flatulence.
